About Durga

Goddess of Protection, Durga’s story is one of transformation and transcending the ego. She is the deity to call upon when seeking physical, emotional, or mental strength.

Durga translates from Sankrit as “impassable” or “invisible.” It is from the root word, Durg, which means “fortress” or “that which is difficult to pass.”

To invoke the power of Durga, you must ask for help. A vital element in Durga’s story is the need of the call to come from the practitioner or those in need of Durga’s support. Mantra and meditation are two forms of spiritual invocation to invite Durga’s grace and protection into your life.

Optional Homework:

To develop your knowledge around Durga and the themes she expresses, read Sally Kempton’s Awakening Shakti.

Take the vinyasa yoga classmantra, and meditation for Durga on Practice with Clara.

About Friday Night Assembly:

We’re hosting a monthly discussion on the philosophy, mythology, and technicalities that pique our curiosity and sharpen the mind.

You’re invited—bring your questions and a notebook. Take a seat and tune in to the conversation.
